Austin ranks atop Kiplinger's '10 best' for next decade

If you haven't already seen, for the second year in a row, Austin, Texas has made the list of 10 best cities for Kiplinger's magazine. In 2009, Austin was listed at #8, and this year, it was listed at #1 for cities for the next decade. Last year, the criteria was based on unemployment rates, business growth, and culture among other things. This year it was narrowed down to three components--smart people, great ideas, and collaboration.

For those of us living in Austin, it really doesn't come as much surprise. Austin has long been considered a hidden gem amongst metropolitan areas. But what does Austin's success mean to you and buying a home? Well, probably what you would think. According to the 2009 article, 3,300 new jobs were added in Austin over the year. In basic economic principles, more jobs equals more disposable income which equals more spending (ugh, bad thoughts of 8 a.m. Economics are coming back to me).

While credit scores don't go as far as they did a couple years ago in regards to getting a loan, Austin home buyers should feel encouraged. Interest rates are still low, jobs are on the rise, and that increased spending can be associated with the ability to increase/repair credit scores.

Finally, as the number of Austin foreclosures has been on the rise, so have Texas FHA loans. These loans have allowed more people achieve home ownership. With an increase in home construction, purchasing and selling in the Austin area, the Austin housing market appears to be side by side with the city itself as we move into the new decade.
